Fromearlytimes,Daoistwritersclaimedtoreceivescripturesviarevelationfromheavenlybeings.Innumerouscases,thesewritingswerecomposedoverthecourseofmanynightsandbydifferentmediums.Newrevelationswereoftenhastilyappended,andtheresultingunevennessgaverisetotheimpressionthatDaoisttextsoftenappearslapdashandcontaincontradictions.ALibraryofCloudsfocusesontherewritingofDaoistscripturesintheUpperClarity(Shangqing)lineageinfourth-andfifth-centuryChina.ScholarshiponUpperClarityDaoismhasbeendominatedbyattemptstouncover“original”or“authentic”texts,whichhasresultedintheneglectoflaterscriptures―includingtheworkfullytranslatedandannotatedhere,theScriptureoftheImmaculateNumen,oneoftheThreeWonders(sanqi)andamongthemostprizedDaoisttextsinmedievalChina.Thescripture’slackofacoherentstructureanditsdifferentauthorialvoiceshaveledmanytoseeitnotasaunifiedworkbutthecreationofdifferenteditorswhoshapedandreshapeditovertime.
ALibraryofCloudsconstructsnewwaysofunderstandingthecomplexauthorshipoftextsliketheScriptureoftheImmaculateNumenandtheirplaceinearlymedievalDaoism.Itstressestheirsignificanceinunderstandingthewaysinwhichmanuscriptswerewritten,received,anddistributedinearlymedievalChina.Bysituatingthescripturewithinitsimmediatehagiographicandritualcontexts,itsuggeststhatthiskindofrevelatoryliteratureisbestunderstoodasapasticheofideas,aprocessofweavingtogetherpreviouslycirculatingnotionsandbeliefsintoanewscripturalfabric.
